Monitoring self-consumption from the solar generation meter

[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]With the latest generation of smart meters it is now possible to measure how much energy generation is actually being consumed by using a twin element meter.  This type of meter has two measuring circuits, one for the solar energy generation, and the other measures the energy import and exported to the grid via the consumer unit.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”2/3″][vc_column_text]Measuring Utilised Generation

The meter is installed like a normal solar generation meter, however the additional measuring element is connected to the consumer unit.  This makes it possible to calculate how much of the solar energy generation is being used by making a simple calculation (PV generation – export = generation utilised).  Basically we take the surplus generation (net export) away from total generation.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″][text-with-icon icon_type=”font_icon” icon=”icon-ok” color=”Accent-Color”]Total Import[/text-with-icon][text-with-icon icon_type=”font_icon” icon=”icon-ok” color=”Accent-Color”]Total Export[/text-with-icon][text-with-icon icon_type=”font_icon” icon=”icon-ok” color=”Accent-Color”]Total Generation[/text-with-icon][text-with-icon icon_type=”font_icon” icon=”icon-ok” color=”Accent-Color”]Total Generation Utilised[/text-with-icon][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/3″][image_with_animation image_url=”3920″ animation=”Fade In” img_link_target=”_self” img_link_large=”yes”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”2/3″][vc_column_text]Using power diverters to utilise surplus solar energy

With this information users will better understand when to turn on appliances to minimise energy purchased from the grid.  They will also know what percentage of energy is being exported to the grid to compare against the deemed export of 50%.  With the dual element meter readings it is easier to decide whether further investment in energy saving devices is worthwhile.  Such as power diverters for automatically heating the water, charging an electric vehicle or storage battery when there is excess energy generation.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]The Emlite Twin Element meter can be purchased from the store.  The meter comes with a network roaming SIM card for automatic meter reading on the Openmetrics web portal.

Installation instructions and further guidance can be found on the resources page here.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/4″][vc_column_text]Openmetrics Web Portal displays the half-hour profile for energy import, export and solar energy generation.  Daily and monthly totals can also be shown for long term analysis.
